Take A Virtual Trip To The Cannes Film Festival With These AMC+ Movies
It's almost time for the closing night of the Cannes Film Festival, that most glittering and glamorous of international festivals featuring the best and buzziest movies and their famous stars and directors. For those who aren't lucky enough to be on the French Riviera for a stroll along the Croisette to see and be seen, the next best thing (we think) is to check out AMC+ for a selection of cinematic features that screened at Cannes in recent years. This includes several films that won the Palme d'Or, the most prestigious honor bestowed at the competition.
Blue Is the Warmest Color
This controversial and highly erotic French film explores the passionate relationship between two women over many years. At the 2013 festival, the Palme d'Or was awarded to the movie, as well as its director Abdellatif Kechiche and the two lead actresses, Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux. Train to Busan
When a mysterious virus breaks out across the country, the infected turn into the murderous undead in this feature from South Korea that screened at Cannes in 2016, and was directed by Yeon Sang-ho. A few terrified travelers find themselves trapped on a bullet train from hell, fighting for their lives as hordes of the living dead crash towards them, crawling closer with every stop. Suspicion is rife and tensions run high as some passengers will do anything to survive and make it to the safe zone. Stream Train to Busan on AMC+.
Corsage
This much buzzed about film tells the fictional account of one year in the life of Empress Elisabeth of Austria. Written and directed by Marie Kreutzer, the movie is set on Christmas Eve 1877, when Elisabeth, once idolized for her beauty, is on the precipice of her 40th birthday. Empress Elisabeth is played by Vicky Krieps, who won an award for her performance at the 2022 festival. Watch Corsage now on AMC+.
Irréversible
Another film from France, this controversial arthouse thriller from Gaspar Noé travels back in time to tell the story of a couple, played by Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel, who experience an act of brutal violence that changes their lives forever. Screened at the 2002 festival, this graphic film is not for the faint of heart. Stream Irréversible on AMC+.
The Wind That Shakes the Barley
This epic tale of two brothers torn apart by Ireland's revolt against British rule in the 1920's features Cillian Murphy (The Dark Knight, Inception) and Pádraic Delaney (The Tudors) as the O'Donovan brothers. The heartbreaking drama, which lays bare the horror of war and the difficulty of creating a new nation, was directed by the legendary Ken Loach and won the Palme d'Or, the first of two for Loach, at the 2006 festival. I, Daniel Blake
A widowed carpenter, played by Dave Johns, and a single mother, played by Hayley Squires, forge a touching friendship as they battle a callous U.K. welfare system in this powerful, urgent story that spotlights how hard it is to survive in a world beset by hunger, homelessness, and medical problems. Directed by Ken Loach, this important movie won the Palme d'Or at the 2016 festival, making Loach one of only a few filmmakers who have won the celebrated award twice. Dheepan
Directed by Jacques Audiard, this Palme d'Or winner at the 2015 festival is the gripping saga of a soldier (played by Antonythasan Jesuthasan) on the losing side of the Sri Lankan civil war who must pose as a family with people he barely knows, in order to flee his war-torn country for France.
