Katelyn Nacon, who plays Enid on AMC's The Walking Dead, talks about filming an iconic piece of the comics and how the communities can bounce back after Alpha's devastating revenge. 

Q: The Kingdom fair is finally here! And they have a movie theater! How important is this day to all the communities?

A: It’s extremely important. The communities haven’t seen each other in such a long time and they get a glimpse at reality before the apocalypse. It’s great. It’s pivotal for all of the communities to be together like this. I loved it! I loved everything about the fair. It’s the first time we’ve been in this world and had a glimpse at the past before everything was ruined. Everyone is so happy and they just seem like normal people. In a sense, they’re back in their normal reality.

Q: When we first met Enid, she was very guarded and didn’t even stay inside of the community. How have you noticed the way she’s opened up over time?

A: She’s grown a lot. She had a lot of growing to do since we first met her. Now, she’s very secure in herself and secure in her capabilities. She’s learned a lot from Glenn’s death and Carl’s death and the importance of letting people in. Even if you have a limited time, you’re not living if you’re shutting people out. She’s very different since when we first met her.

Q: Any thoughts on Lydia being granted asylum? What do you make of the situation she’s in and has put others in?  

A: It’s extremely complicated, but I think it’s good at the same time. No one should die if they don’t need to. Whether they are imprisoned or punished for what they’ve done, death isn’t the answer – especially in a world where death constantly surrounds people... I think she has a lot to learn and she could be good for the community – as long as her mom stops killing everyone. [Laughs] People are constantly changing throughout this environment. When you’re faced with new threats like people, and not walkers, it changes every kind of dynamic you’re in. Someone like Tara never expected to become a leader, but it was something that needed to happen in order for this society to grow. The same thing happened with Enid.

Q: Siddiq still believes the communities are strong enough to stay together and not let fear win, but how do the Whisperers threaten everything they’ve built thus far? 

A: You constantly have to live through loss. Fear and death can always rip people apart, especially when you lose people so close to you. Fingers can be pointed and people can be blamed and it can turn into a nasty situation, but they’ve gone through these kinds of battles before. I would hope they know how to react to this and will bond together and become even stronger to defeat this evil that’s taken over their life and society.

Q: What was it like introducing the Whisperers to the show and playing with such an iconic element from the comics?  

A: It was very exciting... Not only is it such a huge group from the comics and such an iconic part of the whole series, but it’s also just a really cool concept. People taking skins from dead people in order to survive and live in a completely different way from our former selves... I loved the way that they did it.

Q: What will you take away from your time on the show?

A: I’ve learned so much from being on this show and working with such talented people. I’ll always be grateful. The past five years of my life have been pivotal. I’ll never forget those first few years on such a big show. It was my first big job as an actor and I’ve learned so much that I will take on with me in my life.
