How the Dispatches Crew Brought the Fantastical Show to Life

The complexity and depth of the Dispatches From Elsewhere story is propelled forward by the fantastical world it lives within.

Large-scale art murals that can speak, big foot, the Store with Beautiful Things — these are just a few of the mysterious and elaborate manifestations that the crew created to bring the show to life.

"No two episodes are the same. It's a huge challenge from a production standpoint because every episode is like a little movie. Every episode has got new sets, new locations," explains Executive Producer Jeff Freilich in this video where the cast and creators take you behind-the-scenes of how they made the series:

Clara's house alone is made up of multiple floors of hidden art and magical effects to reveal it — like setting the walls on fire to uncover hidden messages underneath.

"When we first shined that black light it was like magic it was so cool," Eve Lindley shares as she reflects back on filming the scene in which a black light revealed wall-to-wall messages from Clara herself.

Beyond the moments of surprise, the sets and locations that the crew produced amplified the story. When Simone and the team visited Clara's home, they were still deeply immersed in the game. Clara's whereabouts and even whether she was alive was still in question. It turns out what they didn't find was just as important as what they did.

"We kind of left out a whole layer that makes it feel like a real person's space and I think it made it feel a little bit more creepy in a way," explains Production Designer Kate Bunch.
