Comic Book Men - Q&A With Ashley Greene
Comic Book Men guest star Ashley Greene talks about what it's like to be Kevin Smith's assistant, her role on Jay and Silent Bob's Top 5 Comics Countdown and how she got so good at closing deals.
Q: What’s the best part of being Kevin’s assistant?
A: I have the most fun when we’re filming. I really want to act; that’s been my dream ever since I was two and a half years old. When we’re on set, I see all these amazing actors and actresses perform and I get to see Kevin direct. Kevin’s sets are so amazing. People always walk out of there saying, “I’ve never been on such a cool set. I wish I could work with Kevin all the time.” He just sets such a good mood. Plus, he gave me a small scene in Yoga Hosers with his daughter, Harley Quinn, and Johnny Depp’s daughter and son. He’s definitely opening doors and being his assistant is definitely benefiting.
Q: What do you think is different about Kevin’s style that makes it much more relaxed?
A: Kevin always says he’s an editor, not a director, which we all know is absolutely crazy. But I think he means that instead of telling the actors what to do, he lets the actors make choices on their own. If he wants them to do something different, he’ll shout it out. But he lets the actors play and have fun, and he keeps his calm. Every time someone comes to set for the first time, he always announces it to the whole crew and makes everyone feel special and important.
Q: Why did Kevin ask you to spend a week across the country at the Secret Stash?
A: Kevin wanted me to go because I do these YouTube videos, Jay and Silent Bob’s Top 5 Comics Countdown With Secret Stashley, where I talk about comics. He wanted me to see what comics I was selling and what I was promoting. It was really about getting familiar with the material so it would be easier to connect with my fans on YouTube, and to actually be there with the guys and handle the merchandise.
Q: How did you get started doing the Top 5 Comics Countdown?
A: One day, Kevin was making fun of my name, and somehow “Stash” came up, and he said, “Oh my god, Secret Stashley! You’re going to do the Top 5 videos as Secret Stashley!” At first, I was really nervous because that was the first time I was being directed by Kev, but he made me feel comfortable and gave me a lot of direction. For the first few videos, I had to find my own voice. The first few episodes are a little raunchier because Kevin is used to directing Jay in those videos, and I think he realized, “The audience doesn’t want a girl version of Jay, they want an Ashley” so now they reflect more of me.
Q: Do you read any comics?
A: I’ve always been more of a nerd, but when I started doing the Top 5 Comics Countdown, Kevin wanted me to be familiar with the issues I was talking about, so I would say for the past year I know more than I’ve ever known. And even just hanging out with Kevin, that’s all he talks about. His house is filled with comic stuff.
Q: In the show, Walt can’t believe you’d choose Christian Bale over Adam West as the better Batman. Do you have a favorite version?
A: It’s so funny, because it’s during that scene where I’m trying to get that guy to sell me his Batman belt. I really do particularly like Christian Bale because he’s the Batman I grew up on, but I really was mostly playing it to get that belt. Bryan actually said, “Maybe it was a sales tactic,” and no one believed him, but it was true! I’m not a hater! I really just wanted him to sell it to me for the cheapest price. I’m a fan of all the Batmen. They all have something different to offer.
Q: You have a knack for making deals! What was it like working with the customers at the Stash?
A: It felt pretty easy. I’ve never done sales, but I used to be a server and I used to sell wines and foods that I’ve never tasted before. I would just make things up or play to what the customer wanted to hear, so I decided to go with what I know and connect with these people. The customers were really cool, too; they were both really lovely. I just talked to them like a normal person, so it wasn’t just about the sale in the moment, and I think they responded to that.
Q: Were there any highlights from your time at the Stash?
A: The guys are amazing. I haven’t laughed that many times in so long. Everyone was so funny and welcoming. I was nervous to meet Walt at first, but he was so funny and so kind. I couldn’t wait to get up every day and go to the store and hang out at the Stash.
Q: How did it feel when Walt offered you a roster spot at the Stash?
A: When Walt asked me to stay there, I first worried about Kevin, and I thought, “Kevin would laugh at me!” If I just said, “Bye, I’m going to go live in the cutest little town ever, and live the cutest life next to the cutest beach and talk about comics,” Kevin would have killed me. And second of all, I was just shocked. I felt so terrible for having to say no, because as cute a town as Red Bank is, I am a city girl. I grew up in Vegas, I live in LA- - I don’t think I could have done it.
