The Walking Dead’s Most Horrifying Scenes
The Walking Dead is chock full of horror, from walkers and savage humans, to the many, many, many grisly ways that people are maimed or killed. Last week's installment of the show, "On the Inside," takes the idea of horror to an extreme, as Connie and Virgil are terrorized by strange, feral creatures in one of the most genuinely frightening episodes ever. Below we dive into other memorable moments on The Walking Dead that either shocked or scared the bejesus out of us.
RICK KILLS A LITTLE ZOMBIE GIRL (Season 1, Episode 1, "Days Gone Bye")
The first walker we ever see on The Walking Dead is a little girl. At first Rick thinks she's just a normal girl, one who's wearing bunny slippers and a bathrobe, who stops to pick up a stuffed animal. "Little girl? I'm a policeman," he informs her. Then in a plot twist, Rick realizes she's a walker. "Oh my God," he says. She comes towards him (rather quickly for a zombie), and he takes a shot. She falls backwards to the ground. And so the series begins...
CAROL'S DAUGHTER IS A WALKER (Season 2, Episode 7, "Pretty Much Dead Already")
Sophia is missing, and the survivors who are staying at Hershel's farm have been searching for her. But Shane, upset that Lori won't acknowledge him as the father of her baby and enraged that Hershel is keeping walkers in his barn, has given up. "Enough risking our lives for a little girl who's gone! Enough living next to a barn full of things that are trying to kill us!" he seethes. He breaks open the barn door, lets all the walkers out and kills them. Then a final walker emerges, and it's Sophia. Carol sobs. Everyone else is shell-shocked. It's up to Rick to put her down with one shot.
CARL SHOOTS LORI (Season 3, Episode 4, "Killer Within")
Lori's giving birth to Judith, but she's losing too much blood and knows she's going to die. She bids Carl a final farewell, and after Maggie performs a C-section, Judith is born. Maggie, carrying Judith, tells Carl they need to leave, but he says, "We can't just leave her here. She'll turn." Knowing what needs to be done, Maggie reaches for her gun, but a tearful Carl insists on doing it, explaining, "She's my mom." A single gunshot is heard, and a resolute Carl walks away.
THE GOVERNOR BEHEADS HERSHEL (Season 4, Episode 8, "Too Far Gone")
In a standoff over who gets to live in the prison, the Governor forces Rick's hand by taking Hershel and Michonne as hostages. "We can all live in the prison or none of us can," Rick declares, prompting the Governor to put the blade of Michonne's katana at Hershel's throat. "We all can change," Rick says, further appealing to the Governor. "Liar," the Governor hisses in response, slashing Hershel and nearly decapitating him. A few minutes later, he finishes the job, as Maggie and Beth look on in anguish.
LIZZIE LOOKS AT THE FLOWERS (Season 4, Episode 14, "The Grove")
Lizzie Samuels is "messed up," as her sister Mika says. Lizzie plays tag with a walker and loses it when Carol kills the walker, yelling, "She was my friend and you killed her!" She feeds a mouse to a trapped walker and is on the verge of letting it bite her. She stabs her sister to death, telling Carol and Tyreese that Mika will reanimate because "I didn't hurt her brain," and reveals she was about to stab Judith too. "This is how she is," Carol decides reluctantly. "She can't be around other people." That's when a sorrowful Carol tells Lizzie to "just look at the flowers," and shoots and kills her.
NOAH DIES BECAUSE OF NICHOLAS (Season 5, Episode 14, "Spend")
Glenn has a plan for him, Noah, and Nicholas to escape a revolving door surrounded by walkers. Would it have worked? Probably? But Nicholas didn't wait to find out. "No! No! Stop! It's not safe!" Nicholas cries. Then he pries himself out of his section of the revolving door, which means that walkers can reach into Glenn and Noah's section of the door. All it takes is a couple undead arms reaching in to grab a screaming Noah, who is graphically bitten to death as blood spurts everywhere, and Glenn watches helplessly in horror.
NEGAN BEATS GLENN & ABRAHAM TO DEATH (Season 7, Episode 1, "The Day Will Come When You Won't Be")
It's a moment fans won't forget, when Negan recites ominously, "Eeny meeny miny moe" as he points Lucille at each person in turn. Until he gets to Abraham. Then he lowers Lucille with a boom. But Abraham gets back up. "Taking it like a champ!" Negan crows. Abraham utters his final words, "Suck my nuts," and is rewarded with a savage beating. The blood from Lucille splatters onto Rick. Daryl lunges for Negan, who decides to punish Glenn because Daryl fought back. One of Glenn's eyeballs pops out, and Glenn manages to croak, "Maggie, I'll find you," before Negan mock-apologizes to Maggie and then finishes the job until Glenn is no more.
THE WHISPERERS MAKE THEMSELVES KNOWN (Season 9, Episode 8, "Evolution")
Eugene knew. "This wasn't a normal herd," he tells the disbelieving trio of Daryl, Aaron, and Jesus. "They were whispering to each other." But then Jesus dies at the hand of a "walker" who warns him, "You are where you do not belong." And when Daryl kills that "walker" and examines him, he realizes he’s in a skin mask and the "walker" is actually human – and they're dealing with a whole new level of enemy. Then sinister whispers surround the group in the fog: "They're trapped. Circle 'round. Don't let them slip by. Keep them together."
HEADS ON PIKES, COURTESY OF THE WHISPERERS (Season 9, Episode 15, "The Calm Before")
Alpha makes it clear to Daryl that she doesn't want anyone in his group crossing into her land. "I've marked the border to the north. You'll see it as you leave," she tells him. Daryl's confused by what she means... but only until he, Michonne, and Yumiko find a bloodied Siddiq tied to a tree who leads them to a chilling sight, a line of 10 spikes with heads on them. The heads all belong to people they know, including Enid, Tara, and -- worst of all for Carol -- Henry. Everyone is horrified and pain is etched on all their faces.
This isn't an exhaustive list by any means, so tell us what we missed. Keep watching this final season… there are plenty more thrills and chills to come.
